But, with a TV commission on the table and a job to do, she sets off across the world to make a documentary on ocean energy and its positive effects on climate change. As the camera rolls Nathalie s worst nightmares slowly unfold; accidents happen, drilling rigs sink and marine structures are mysteriously damaged. At the same time a US senator, involved in a controversial new law concerning ownership of the seas, is caught in a sordid sex scandal. For decades teachers, biologists, geographers and interested members of the public have asked for an up-to-date account of how Northland, Auckland and the Coromandel Peninsula and their landforms were formed. Here, for the first time, is an accessible account designed to be of interest to all levels of understanding. Almost all of the older rocks were deposited as sediment or erupted as lava on the floor of the ancient Pacific Ocean. Some were plastered onto the coastal edge of Gondwana, and at least 100,000 km3 of these rocks were pushed up out of the ocean and slid onto Northland, about 20 million years ago. About the same time, 1 km-thickness of Waitemata sandstones were deposited in a deep-sea basin over Auckland. Most of the subsequent history of northern New Zealand was dominated by fiery volcanic activity of greater diversity than any area of similar size elsewhere in the world. This included eruptions of andesite stratovolcanoes, giant caldera volcanoes, searing ignimbrite flows, viscous rhyolite domes and at least 200 small basalt volcanoes erupted in seven volcanic fields. The present-day shape and landforms of the region reflect its more recent history with local uplift, erosion, volcanic activity, construction of New Zealand¿s largest sand-dune barriers and harbours, and moulding of the coast by the oscillating sea levels during the Ice Ages.

Fire-derived organic matter, also known as pyrogenic carbon (PyC), is ubiquitous on Earth. It can be found in soils, sediments, water and air. In this wide range of environments, fire-derived organic matter, represents a key component of the organic matter pool, and, in many cases, the largest identifiable group of organic compounds. PyC is also one of the most persistent organic matter fractions in the ecosystems, and its study is, therefore, particularly relevant for the global carbon cycle. From its production during vegetation fires to its transfer into soils, sediments and waters, PyC goes through different transformations, both abiotic and biotic. Contrary to early assumptions, PyC is not inert and interacts strongly with the environment: evidence of microbial decomposition, oxidation patterns and interactions with minerals have been described in different matrices. PyC travels across these different environments and it is modified chemically and physically, but remains persistent. This Research Topic explores important questions in our understanding of fire-derived organic matter, from the characterization and quantification of PyC components, to the transformation and mobilization processes taking place on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The studies compiled here provide novel and, often, unexpected results. They all answer some of the questions posed and, more importantly, provide scope for many more.

Doomsday 'prepper' Connor Holloway and his family live a life of isolation in their apocalypse-ready compound, and he prefers it that way. After being driven out of his small town by rumors and cruelty, he has no interest in integrating back into society. But when a pandemic hits the United States, there is only one place the townspeople can go if they want to live: his doorstep. He knows his chance for revenge has arrived when he realizes one important truth-he now has the power to decide who lives and who dies. But vengeance always comes at a price, and Connor's may cost him everything. The Ocean in the Fire is a story about one man's journey of self-discovery during the end of the world. As Connor begins to see the darker parts of himself, he begins to question whether the existence he chose for his family was motivated by love, or by something far less noble. And as he searches for redemption, he wonders if it may always be just out of reach.
