'That invaluable Christian reference book.' Church Times `Covering the whole range of Christian thought, it is specially valuable to the young student.' Church Quarterly Review This selection of writings from the most important moments in the history of Christianity has become established as a classic work. Now incorporating a wealth of new material, this new edition will be an essential reference source for anyone interested in the Christian Church. While retaining the original material selected by Henry Bettenson, Chris Maunder has added a substantial section of more recent writings. These illustrate the Second Vatican Council; the theologies of liberation; Church and State from 'Thatcher's Britain' to Communist Eastern Europe; Black, feminist, and ecological theology; ecumenism; and inner-faith dialogue. The emphasis on moral debate in the contemporary Churches is reflected in selections dealing with, for example, homosexuality, divorce, AIDS, and in-vitro fertilization. Documents of the Christian Church thus provides insights into the whole 2000 years of Christian theological and political debate.

This collection of legal documents affecting the Christian Church in the Roman Empire is the first its kind in any language. In time the monuments here translated cover the period from the foundation of the Church to the deposition of Romulus Augustulus, the last emperor in the West (476), and to the publication of the second (and only extant) edition of the Code of Justinian I, the most conspicuous champion of Caesaropapism in the East (534)—each terminus ad quem being an arbitrary, but a natural, limit. The character of the originals, which are mostly in either Greek or Latin, is strictly secular, that is, the documents emanate from the State’s officials, ordinarily the emperors, and thus expose the State’s attitude toward the Church. —From the Introduction

White presents this excellent book, based on thirty-three years of teaching experience, as a resource for students and scholars who are engaged in studying and teaching the forms and meaning of Christian worship. White utilizes original documents and classical statements related to worship, and examines historically the application of liturgical practice in parish life. The book includes photographs, charts, and maps.
